Winter birds

I’ve been really enjoying the winter weather this past week. I’ve especially enjoyed all the birds flocking to the feeders outside our dining room. Here’s a few of them, though the list includes black-capped chickadees, chestnut-backed chickadees (a new one for me), goldfinches, house sparrows, juncos, and small little wren-like birds that move way too quickly about the birch tendrils.

  1. The word got out in the bird community that the Smith house on Sunrise Lane had free food. I had at least 60 birds (try to do THAT count) at my five feeders. In addition to the usual suspects as you described, I had a Rufous sided Towhee, a couple Flickers, and, best of all, a single quail, which naturally, I named “Dan”.

I didn’t mention the starlings and the scrub jays, which, although they need to eat, tend to crowd out their smaller friends.

And then, of course, there were the red and gray squirrels. It was a party in my back yard!
