Slomosa in Portland

In mid-April, I took MG to Slomosa at the Mission Theater. It was her first real rock show in a small venue. I saw them last year in Seattle with Scott and Andy and we stood at the edge of the stage. The show was amazing, so I encouraged us to do the same. The experience was great, and I was thrilled to have MG see the artist up close and see how they played. Neither of us are huge “crowded, loud spaces” fans, but we stayed on our perch until the mosh pit really took off for the last 3 songs.

The show was amazing. The opening act, The Mainliners, was more nostalgic punk rock (though more polished) for me, but MG enjoyed them as well. Slomosa played just as hard (if not harder) than last year. Getting to see Tor, Jard, Marie and Benjamin that close was awesome, and I think my kid really gets the genre and experience now.

Oh, and the next day I drove back up to Seattle after work to see them again at the Tractor Tavern with Scott and Andy. Nearly identical set list, though they added “Traktor” to the encore. We chatted briefly with Tor after the show. He mentioned that the audiences in Europe were much younger than the US, but it doesn’t help that most venues were 21 and over.

It was clear that Slomosa, like many artists, view Seattle with reverence that Portland never seems to get. But they were also riding the high of having recorded at the KEXP studio earlier that day. I can’t wait to see how their following grows once that recording goes live.

It’s probably too late for now, but I highly recommend seeing them. I really wish I could see them play with Belzebong in Munich.
